Interesting Data

Here are some interesting data points with some insights on what they mean / what impact they may have on business and government. Click on the menu items above for data and insights relevant to more specific topics / industries.

127 new devices connect to the internet every second.

- The McKinsey Global Institute

This data point is one of many that illustrates the challenges facing businesses and governments with their cybersecurity. Many of these new devices are Internet of Things (IoT), and use operation systems that many IT network security solutions either cannot see or secure.

By 2025, it is expected that there will be more than 30 billion IoT connections, almost 4 IoT devices per person on average and that also amounts to trillions of sensors connecting and interacting on these devices.

IT/OT convergence has been growing over the last several years. The rapid growth of IoT devices means that businesses and government need to make sure their networks are capable of managing and securing all of this data.

Ransomware costs are expected to reach $265 billion by 2031.

- Cybersecurity Ventures (Estimate)

Ransomware has increased as cyber attacks are increasingly driven by experienced and well-funded criminal organizations and state-funded groups. What businesses and governments need to be aware of is that malware and ransomware is often the result of a network breach that happened several months or more before the demands are sent. To better protect data, organizations should assume breach and take steps to assess and enhance their cybersecurity in 2022.
